I talked with a friend who runs a printing company in Cheras and has been doing the same thing for 10 years — waiting for people to come to him, print banners and repeat. Last year he almost went out of business. What’s changed? The “old way” of running a business has been vastly outperformed by rising costs and increased competition. But then he noticed something. While his walk-in business has been drying up, his “niche” – custom packaging for home baked goods – has been booming. He stopped trying to be all things to all people and focused on one area of growth.

This is what SME opportunities look like in Malaysia now. They are not illuminated by large neon signs but exist as a result of the way people are changing how they choose to live. Spending more money on convenience, health and “experiences” versus just cheap prices creates many opportunities for growth if you can identify frustrations in the marketplace. The government has been promoting digitalization as an opportunity for SME businesses to grow for a number of years. But only recently has it hit home with the average business leader. We are seeing an ever-increasing trend towards automating processes; it is becoming more difficult than ever to find dependable employees. A business owner can realize that a tool like QIAI can complete the functions of two administrative assistants. So, he can spend more time focusing on bigger picture items rather than being buried in administrative work.

The opportunity for SMEs is to become your customers’ “expert friend”. Use QIAI to understand your customer data or send a handwritten thank-you note for being a customer. This person-to-person connection will be what brings customers back to you when the economy begins to fluctuate.

Also monitor the emerging markets that you as a SME will be operating in, such as the Halal Digital Economy. Malaysia is recognized as an international leader in this market. The Halal Market isn’t just about food. There are many types of Halal-certified products and services, including logistics, cosmetics, and financial technologies. Growth in 2026 will not be a simple straight line up. It will be a series of pivots. You will try new things, use technology to make your life easier, listen to data and adapt your business accordingly. The “SME” title is not limiting but a superpower allowing you to move at a faster pace than your larger competitors. The point of this article is to remind you not to work so hard at your business that you forget to work on it.
